TOP OF THE DAY by Howard Polskin

Jun. 3, 2026

Greetings! The “60 Minutes” Watch: To no one’s surprise, correspondent Scott Pelley got fired last night after his dramatic public takedown of the program’s new honcho Nick Bilton. Pelley showed what it takes to stand up to the media arm of an autocratic administration. Now all eyes rest on correspondents Lesley Stahl, Bill Whitaker and Jon Wertheim. What will they do?….Best science fiction in the last week. White House physician Dr. Sean Barbabella gave the nearly 80-year-old Trump a clean bill of health over the weekend, according to various reports. Such creative writing! Here’s my takeaway from the report. At 238 pounds, he’s on the verge of obesity.  In fact, he’s the heaviest president in more than 100 years. Overall, he’s the third heaviest president in history trailing William Howard Taft (300+ pounds) and Grover Cleveland (260 pounds). Keep eating those Big Macs, Mr. President…Save the Date: The White House Correspondents Association (WHCA) dinner, which was interrupted by a gunman in April, has been rescheduled to July 24. Yawn.  Naturally, Trump intends to show up and he’s already yapping on Truth Social about how he might spew some “rather nasty statements, at least as it concerns certain people.” Why does the WHCA want to platform Trump again and give him a chance to kick journalists in the teeth?…So weird: Trump posted a picture of himself on Truth Social from about 20 years ago in a dark suit in front of a mirror under the following 72-point boldface headline: Trump 007. He’s obviously trying to emulate British agent James Bond, 007, who is licensed to kill. So just what message is he trying to send? Beats me…NBA finals start tonight. Go Knicks! (But I won’t hold it against you if you root for the amazing Victor Wembanyama and his Spurs)…If you keep reading, I’ll keep Righting. Howard.
