TOP OF THE DAY by Howard Polskin

May. 8, 2026

Greetings! Remember Kyle Rittenhouse? He’s the young man who became a darling of the ultra-right in the wake of his acquittal for shooting and killing two men and wounding another during civil unrest in Kenosha, WI. in August, 2020? NBC reports that a poisonous spider bit Rittenhouse on his thigh, requiring hospitalization. The humor site Boing Boing offers this biting headline about his encounter with the venomous arachnid: Spider’s Mouth Infected by Kyle RittenhouseDid not know this: This headline from Fox News caught my animal-loving eye: “Millions of barn animals die every year in barn fires – a crisis we can no longer ignore.” Thanks for alerting me, Fox, to this worthy issue…In a warm tribute to media maverick Ted Turner, TheRighting contributor Max Robins points to stark differences between the visionary CNN founder and Donald Trump, notably when it comes to philanthropy:  “In complete contrast to The Donald’s reportedly sham charitable contributions and demeaning treatment of cherished institutions, Ted gave much of his wealth away, including $1 billion to the United Nations. He funded numerous non-profits to fight climate change and promote nuclear disarmament. Without hesitation, he’d often say the most important part of his legacy was his environmental activism”….Weekend Watch: Want  an upbeat escape to Italy and don’t have the time and cash for the trip? Stanley Tucci, the award-winning actor and expert on all things Italian has just the ticket. The multipart series “Tucci in Italy,” bows on National Geographic starting Monday.  Here’s the full opening episode available on YouTube to enjoy now….If you keep reading, I’ll keep Righting. Howard
