TOP OF THE DAY by Howard Polskin

May. 16, 2024

Greetings!  Too early.  That was my reaction to yesterday’s news about the first Biden-Trump debate slated for June 27.  Voters must be fatigued by this never-ending contest.  Couldn’t this verbal slug-fest wait until September?…Right wing knuckle-dragger of the week: The aptly named Kansas City Chief placekicker Harrison Butker.   Giving the commencement address at conservative Benedictine College in Atchison, Kansas, Butker urged young women to embrace the role of homemaker and wife.  He dissed Pride Month too and whined that women are told “diabolical lies” about their careers.  The Associated Press has the best recap of his remarks.  Don’t think Butker and his spouse will be double-dating with teammate Travis Kelce and his gal pal Taylor Swift anytime soon…Did not remember this: CNN anchor Jake Tapper, who’s just been tapped to be one of the moderators for the June 27 debate, had a dinner date with Monica Lewinsky in the winter of 1998, just  weeks prior to revelations about her affair with Bill Clinton.  Back then, Tapper wrote a story about that date for the alt-weekly Washington City Paper: I Dated Monica Lewinsky (a masterpiece of minimalistic headline writing).  Even in 1998, the then unknown Tapper showed he could make words dance.  The author of two bestselling novels, Tapper is much more than a talking head with a good head of hair.…If you keep reading, I’ll keep Righting.
