Buchanan never became president or won the Republican nomination. Yet on July 21, 2016, Trump accepted the GOP nomination after running on many of the same themes Buchanan had championed for decades. Some 24 years after Houston GOP convention, Buchanan’s ideas had become the Republican Party’s platform.
