Texas has not elected a Democrat to the Senate since 1988. The fact that Talarico remains competitive is less a testament to the power of his message than to the accumulated liabilities of his opponent and the selective memory of a national media that has treated Talarico’s most radical statements as youthful indiscretions rather than as his actual worldview.
