More Traffic Woes for News Websites as Election Year Traffic Plummets in April

June 11, 2024, New  York, NY – TheRighting released its April 2024 election year traffic analysis of mobile and desktop traffic for right wing and mainstream news websites based on Comscore data.

Among the highlights of TheRighting’s April 2024 findings:

APRIL 2024 VS APRIL 2020: THE ELECTION YEAR COMPARISON

Once again, TheRighting’s analysis showed the vast majority of news websites on all sides of the political spectrum experienced significant declines in year-over-year (YOY) unique visitors.  Of the 21 websites monitored by TheRighting, only two – The Epoch Times (+18%) and Newsmax (+3%) – increased their audience in the four-year span.

The Federalist led all news sites in traffic decreases, posting a 93% loss between April 2024 and April 2020.  The Washington Times continued its run of huge drops in unique visitors posting an 89% decrease between April 2020 and April 2024.  The Washington Times also lost 92% of its March 2024 audience and 89% of its February 2024 audience.

The three mainstream news outlets TheRighting follows regularly  also suffered from audience erosion in the four-year period: CNN (-35%), The New York Times (-36%) and The Washington Post (-55%).

“While the traffic decreases were not surprising because by the spring of 2020, the Covid crisis had mushroomed into one of the top news stories of the century, I was expecting slightly stronger numbers for April 2024,”  said Howard Polskin, President and Founder, TheRighting.  “April 2024 was dominated by the start of the Trump hush money trial and pro-Palestine demonstrations gripping U.S. campuses. That should have been catnip for audiences.”

APRIL 2024 VS APRIL 2023

Eighty-five percent of the right wing websites in TheRighting’s top 20 lost unique visitors from April 2023 to April 2024.

The three mainstream news websites TheRighting tracks regularly also experienced year-over-year audience losses. Traffic to CNN, which led all news websites monitored by TheRighting with 106,500,000 unique visitors in April 2024, decreased 8%. Dips were also recorded at The Washington Post (-8%) and The New  York Times (-1%).
