Greetings! Irony alert: the days are getting lighter as the nation slips into darkness....Ray of sunshine? California Governor Gavin Newsom gave an inspiring address yesterday blasting Donald Trump’s decision to deploy the National Guard to the streets of Los Angeles. NBC News has the details. In wake of Newsom’s speech, the NY Times opines that he may be the one to lead the Democrats in the fight against Trump’s authoritarian regime. FrontPage theorizes that the Golden State Governor secretly wants to be arrested so that he could vault to the top of the Trump resistance  and “add fuel to the Trump-is-dictator nonsense in the bargain.” Wherever this leads, Newsom owned the news cycle for a few precious hours. (Here’s the speech transcript)...Sen. John Fetterman (D-PA) is drawing praise from the conservative blog Victory Girls for besmirching LA’s anti-ICE demonstrations.  Fetterman described the unrest as “anarchy and true chaos.” Victory Girls gushed that “Senator Fetterman has the clarity that essentially NONE of his fellow Democrats do. They’ve all been working overtime to gaslight us all into believing that all the protests have been peaceful”...Infowars sounds the alarm about this Saturday’s “No Kings” mass protest and frames it as a coup to topple the current administration. According to the bile-spewing InfoWars, “The leftist legacy media, in coordination with Democrats, is laying the groundwork for an attempted overthrow of America by portraying President Trump as a lawless monarch.” Sheesh.  That’s a lot of crazy to process...If you keep reading, I’ll keep Righting. Greetings! Linguistic dilemma.  How should media outlets describe the opposition activities in Los Angeles? Demonstrations? Protests? Civil unrest?  One thing is for certain: most right-wing outlets that I’m reading today are using the word riot. In fact, it seems that it’s the noun of choice....Another prominent name is joining the crowded field of right-wing podcasting.  The NY Post’s conservative and outspoken columnist Miranda Devine (also a Fox News contributor) will get her own program “Pod Force One” beginning tomorrow.  The first guest on the weekly program is President Donald Trump.  Wonder if she’ll grill him about the National Guard in Los Angeles.  (Fat chance!) Future guests include what the Post calls Washington disruptors...CNN’s Andrew Kirell was one of my tablemates at last night’s Mirror Awards dinner in New York honoring reporting about the media in 2024. In this morning’s Reliable Sources newsletter, Kirell captured a few key remarks of honoree Bob Costas's fiery speech disparaging legacy media brands like ABC and CBS for bending the knee to POTUS.  He also took aim at Trump, per Kirell, saying that he “has absolutely no regard and, in fact, has contempt for basic American principles and common decency.” It was the best Mirror Awards speech ever and I’ve seen them all. Bravo Costas.
