Greetings! Strong “60 Minutes” season debut: The headline-grabbing staff upheaval and backstage drama did not diminish the season-opener of the massively popular newsmagazine. The opening segment, which featured the first interview with an airman who was shot down and rescued in a mountainous region in Iran, was a mesmerizing tale of survival. It also spotlighted the technical prowess and raw courage of the rescue teams who extracted the badly hurt Air Force colonel in enemy territory. While the segment showed the U.S. armed forces in a justifiably heroic light, it didn’t attempt to “sell” the purpose of the war to the audience, which critics of Trump-friendly Paramount Skydance, parent company of CBS, might have feared. In fact, at least twice in the segment, the conflict was accurately described as “war,” contrary to the wishes of Trump and his administration. The show’s second segment on the “Pardon Economy” cast a critical eye on how bad actors pay millions to get Trump to pardon them for their sins.  It’s hard to see how the debut program could be criticized for carrying Trump's water.  Let’s see if “60 Minutes” continues on this path. I have doubts but maybe I’ll be surprised. (Read The Hollywood Reporter’s review).... Another reason to like the Buffalo Bills: For many years, I’ve rooted for upstate New York’s rugged professional football team playing in the NFL’s snowiest city. The team, led by my favorite QB Josh Allen, just announced that it will play our northern neighbor’s national anthem, “O Canada,” in addition to the “Star Spangled Banner” at the team’s home opener September 17. Well done Bills! (Breitbart)...More criticism of Trump from the right: American Spectator admonishes the president for his delusional thinking that he can end the war in Iran by “simply declaring victory.” And the editors of the National Review declare that Trump’s proposed $5,000 dividend to voters if the GOP retains the House and the Senate in the midterms was “reckless”...If you keep reading, I’ll keep Righting. TOP OF THE DAY by Howard Polskin

Greetings! My business day began September 11, 2001, by boarding the 8:00 a.m. shuttle from NYC’s LaGuardia Airport to Ronald Reagan National Airport.  I had a 10:00 a.m. meeting in downtown DC at the offices of Sun Microsystems.  It was a perfect late-summer morning, temperatures already climbing above 70 and not a cloud in the sharp blue sky. My plane landed a few minutes early and as soon as I turned on my mobile phone upon rising from my seat, a call came in. It was my assistant, who booked my ticket. “Are you alive?” she asked in near-hysteria. As I disembarked the aircraft, she managed to briefly explain that a plane had crashed into the North Tower of the World Trade Center. I stood near the boarding gate watching CNN for a few minutes, shrugged my shoulders more than a little concerned, and walked to the taxi line. Before getting in a car, I called my contact at Sun Microsystems who assured me the meeting was still happening. My taxi took me past the Pentagon where I noticed a cloud of dark smoke billowing from the one of the world’s largest buildings. It became immediately apparent to me that America was under attack. Screw the meeting, I thought. I gotta get out of here town immediately because the nation’s capital is clearly a target of some unknow adversary. I asked the driver to take me to the nearest Hertz. As he pulled up, a line was already snaking out the door. Thinking fast, I asked him to wait until I secured a car rental and promised him $100 above the meter if he could do that. My plan was to offer him an additional $400 to drive me to a relative’s home in nearby Baltimore if I couldn’t get a vehicle. Luckily, I got one of the last cars at Hertz, peeled off five twenties and headed north to my home in Manhattan, alone in my car with dark thoughts swirling in my head about what the attack would mean for America and the world. And I prayed for the poor souls at the World Trade Center, the Pentagon and the passengers on the doomed flights. I think of that day often and it still fills my heart with an immense sadness.  Howard
