 NY Mayor DeBlasio has allowed riots, featuring thousands of people in close proximity with only scattered use of masks. How, then, does he justify cutting off outlets New Yorkers use to beat the summer heat after months of being cooped up indoors? As the public watch similar scenes play out in dozens of cities, why should they comply with bans on church gatherings? 

The Left Wields Its Science Club

So, are the Democratic Party and the broader Left really “the party of science”? During the pandemic, they have wielded the claim like a club to bludgeon those who demur at the idea that governments need only defer to epidemiologists and healthcare professionals to get policy right. Counterclaims for economic vitality and the exercise of human nature should not, they imply, weigh heavily on political scales.

Social Distancing Is Not a Waste of Liberty or “Living in Fear”

Conservative commentators should refrain from shaming those who, on taking stock of their own circumstances, have decided to remain at home to reduce their risk of coming down with, or spreading, the coronavirus. Be particularly wary of any pundits using our fallen heroes’ sacrifices as political fodder…and advocating mass-shaming groupthink to encourage people to engage in behaviors that could have serious and even deadly consequences.

Time for Reopening

Unlike the great influenza epidemic of 1918-19, which targeted young adults, COVID-19 has killed primarily the elderly, most with aggravating medical conditions. For children, it’s been no more deadly than a seasonal flu. This points toward reopening schools and colleges and universities.
